What’s the Difference Between Whiskey and Whisky? What About Scotch, Bourbon, and Rye?
Why do you see the name of the liquor spelled both as “whiskey” and as “whisky?”.
This difference is not a spelling error but rather a regional variation. The spelling "whiskey" (with an 'e') is generally used in the United States and Ireland. "Whisky" (without the 'e') is used in Scotland, Japan, Canada, and several other countries.
Six Types of Whiskeys You Should Know About:
1. Scotch Whisky:
- Origin: Made entirely in Scotland.
- Ingredients: Generally made from malted barley or grain.
- Aging: Aged in oak casks for more than three years.
- Categories: Divided into five distinct categories: single malt, single grain, blended malt, blended grain, and blended Scotch whisky.
Flavor Profile: Earthy and smoky.
2. Irish Whiskey:
- Origin: Made in Eire (Republic of Ireland) or Northern Ireland.
- Ingredients: Made from yeast-fermented grain mash or a mash of malted cereals.
- Aging: Takes about three years to age in a wooden cask.
- Flavor Profile: Has a smoother finish compared to Scotch.
3. Bourbon:
- Origin: A distilled American whiskey.
- Ingredients: Primarily made from at least 51 percent corn.
- Aging: Stored in charred oak casks and does not contain any additives.
- Flavor Profile: Slightly sweet, a bit smoky, and has a reddish color. It offers inherent flavors of vanilla, oak, fruit, spice, and honey. Bourbon is generally smoother and more approachable than other whiskies.
4. Tennessee Whiskey:
- Origin: Produced in Tennessee, United States.
- Distinction: The key difference from Bourbon is its filtering method; Tennessee whiskey is steeped in charcoal before going into casks for fermentation.
5. Rye Whiskey:
- Origin: Primarily made in North America.
- Ingredients: Made with a mash of at least 51 percent rye (a member of the wheat family).
- Aging: Aged in charred barrels for at least two years.
- Flavor Profile: Has a slight fruity and spicy flavor, making it excellent for whiskey cocktails.
6. Japanese Whisky:
- Origin: Produced in Japan.
- Ingredients: Uses double malted or peated barley.
- Aging: Aged in a wooden cask.
- Flavor Profile: Drier and smokier than other whiskies, and it is available as single malts or blends.
